The Indiana Cooperative Development Center and Indiana Association for Community Economic Development (IACED) are partnering on Thursday, August 18, 2016, to convene a summit and explore strategies for community reinvestment and small business succession using a worker cooperative model to maintain and grow community wealth.
Central to a worker cooperative model is the idea that truly sustainable community economic development requires the creation of viable businesses broadly owned by community residents who can generate profits that can be recycled to catalyze further business opportunities and local wealth creation.
Worker cooperatives are values-driven businesses that put worker and community benefit at the core of their purpose. Worker cooperatives are owned and governed by the employees of the business. They operate in all sectors of the economy and provide workers with both employment and ownership opportunities. Only in the cooperative enterprise is ownership, control, and beneficiary interests vested directly in the hands of the user.
