2022 NWFAEP Annual Environmental Symposium

Please join us at the 2022 Annual Environmental Symposium for a full day of learning, networking, and field activities. We have invited a diverse array of speakers to discuss various environmental subjects which we hope will pique your interest. Speakers from both the public and private sectors will be presenting on topics that include, but are not limited to, environmental justice, mitigation planning, sea level rise, regional food sustainability, and local projects. Additionally, you can participate in one of two field events. While on campus, we will provide guided tours of the nature trails or the university's community garden. We hope to see you all there!

1st Speaker: Here Come the Robots! How Robotic Sorting Technology Will Save Recycling and the Planet presented by Dave Robau of National Energy USA

2nd Speaker: Mitigation Planning: Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Northwest Florida Water Management District (NWFWMD) Coordination presented by Robert Lide of NWFMD

3rd Speaker: Environmental Justice for North Port St. Joe: an LID approach to securing basic infrastructure before redevelopment presented by Monica Woodruff and Dr. Kwame Owussu-Daaku of the University of West Florida Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences

4th Speaker: A Prescription for Healthy Bays: Developing and Implementing the Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan presented by Matt Posner, Director of Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program

5th Speaker: Escambia County Environmental Project's Update of the Pensacola Living Shoreline, Carpenter Creek Watershed Master Plan, and Hollice T. Williams

6th Speaker: "Insights from a decade of monitoring Gulf Sturgeon in the Blackwater River- a critical summer refuge for one of Florida's oldest fishes" with Adam Kaeser of the US Fish and Wildlife

7th Speaker: Managing Florida’s Forests to Proactively Meet Water Quality and Quantity Challenges Presented by Dr. Matt Cohen with the University of Florida's Department of Forest Water Resources & Hydrology

12:45-2:15: Session 3 (Two Presentations)

Keynote Speaker: Practical Decisions for Coastal Projects: Sea-level Rise in Florida - Qiyamah Williams with the Program for Local Adaptation to Climate Effects (PLACE)

Panel Discussion: "Not Everything we Eat is Food" Panel; Panelist includes Camille Hadley of Little Growers, Inc., Chasidy Hobbs of University of West Florida's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Keith Wilkins, previous City of Pensacola City Administrator and current board member of the Florida Brownfield Association. The panel will be moderated by UWF's Dr. Kwame Owussu-Daaku

2:15-2:30: End of Symposium / Break

2:30-4:00 Field Visit(s): Option 1 - Tour of the UWF Community Garden with Chasidy Hobbs; Option 2 - Nature Hike at the Edward Ball Nature Trail at the UWF Campus led by Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences Students.
