8th Annual Spring Tournament 2017 

General Information

The karate tournament will take place on Sunday, May 7th from 8:30am to 3:00pm at Silver Spring International Middle School in the GYM - located at 313 Wayne Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910.  This competition is restricted to only Kaizen Karate students.  The competition will consist of four events:

(1) Ironman/Ironwoman divisions (all ages and belt levels allowed to compete)
(2) Katas (Master Form - purple belt and up ONLY)
(3) Sparring (Point Fighting - must have sparring gear)
(4) Board breaking (yellow belt & up ONLY)

(Please get permission from your instructor before registering for this event.  Students must practice board breaking with their instructor before competing at the Tournament).

*Students can choose one or all divisions listed above depending on belt level*

Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place.  NO other prizes or ribbons will be awarded below 3rd place.

Registration
Registration runs from April 1st - April 30th.  No registrations will be accepted after April 30th as this is a pre-registration event ONLY.  NO EXCEPTIONS. $25 per event

*All waiver forms must be completed by parent / guardian at the front desk on the day of the tournament* 

There is no spectator fee.  Family & friends are welcome to watch.

Although participation is optional, it is strongly recommended that each student participate.  A strong participation by students will make the event more competitive and fun.  Please remember that competition is healthy when approached in the right manner.  This tournament is designed to help students set goals, learn to participate and practice good sportsmanship skills.

Competition Rules
(1) Ironman / Ironwoman:  white belt  - green belt will be compete in sit-ups, push-ups, and snap kicks.  1min will be given for each part of the competition for a total of 3min per competitor.  Total points wins.  Purple belt and up will compete in sit-ups, push-ups, and burpees. All belt levels are allowed to compete in this division.

(2) Kata:  scores will range from 6-10 with judges giving scores based on belt level, age, and complexity of the kata performed.  Both the presentation of the kata and the kata itself are scored as one.  Only Master Form will be judged.  Any other katas / forms will not be scored at the tournament. Purple belt and up ONLY.

(3) Sparring:  No contact to the face.  Light touch to the head guard and body is permitted.  No striking below the belt or at the neck, throat or back.  Points are awarded for well-controlled moves at the face, chest, stomach and ribs.  Each match lasts a full two minutes with total points determining the winner OR first person to 5 points.  Single elimination.  Students are matched by age and belt level.  Two warnings for facial contact or excessive contact is automatic disqualification for the striker.  All fighting participants must wear the completed set of protective equipment (head, hands, foot, mouth and cup for male participants). All belt levels are allowed to compete in this division. MUST have sparring gear in order to compete.

(4) Board Breaking (also called tamishiwari competition): yellow belts and higher only are allowed to compete.  Competitors decide the size of the board they wish to break - 4",  6",  or 12" inch boards.  Students also decide the strike to break the board and will be given 3 boards to break   Judges will determine the winner based on creativity and difficulty of break. Competitors will only get two attempts and partial breaks will be scored and may not be retried. Yellow belts and higher only are allowed to compete.

Judging: Red and Black belts ONLY are allowed to judge at the tournament.  If you would like to judge please let “Coach V” know as soon as possible.
