First Responders Training for Alternative Fueled Vehicles

First Responders in the Asheville Metro Region are invited to attend this FREE one-day course, available either day, provided by Blue Ridge Community College. Space for the workshop is limited to 25 participants per day so register early. This could be the department's trainer or other person that could benefit from this training.

This workshop will give emergency response personnel the opportunity to become familiarized with the growing number of alternative fuel vehicles and stations that they may encounter throughout North and South Carolina. The objective is to assure that personnel involved in emergency response understand the potential hazards, can recognize potential issues, and respond appropriately to a failure or an emergency situation involving of the various types of alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles.

This course covers hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), gaseous fuels (natural gas and propane) and liquid biofuels. This course introduces the different types of fueling stations, charging stations and station safety systems. First responders will learn how to recognize the different Advanced Electric Drive Vehicles and their components. First responders will also become familiar with gaseous fuels, their different properties, current gaseous fuel vehicles, and the vehicle components. This workshop reviews how first responders should approach and assess an incident, required personal protective equipment for responding to an incident, general firefighting measures, and extrication. This class offers many hands on tasks including component location, isolation, and disassembly of components on bench. Vehicle cut away practical exercises are performed during this class.

Blue Ridge Community College is a National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC) member and a national training center http://naftc.wvu.edu/. The curriculum for this training is based on materials from the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium and has been approved by the US Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program.

The training is supported by the US Department of Energy through the Carolina Blue Skies & Green Jobs initiative. The Carolina Blue Skies & Green Jobs Initiative is a bi-state effort to create and retain green collar jobs and reduce dependence on foreign oil by increasing availability and use of alternative fuels in North and South Carolina. The project commenced in March of 2010 and is slated to finish in April 2014. To date, the project has completed its implementation phase and has had a positive impact through the deployment of more than 500 alternative fuel vehicles and the commissioning of more than 140 alternative fueling sites. Vehicles deployed include compressed natural gas (CNG), propane (LPG), hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid, and neighborhood electric vehicles across the Carolinas. Fueling station infrastructure includes biodiesel, E85, CNG, LPG, and electric charging.

Instructors:

Matt Rieger is the Lead Instructor for the Alternative Transportation Technology and the Light Duty Diesel programs at Blue Ridge Community College. Matt is ASE Automotive Master Certified with L1, F1, and Medium/Heavy Truck. He is also CSA Certified as a CNG Fuel System Inspector. He has been in the automotive industry for 25 years as a line technician, shop foreman, or automotive instructor. He has been trained by various OEM vehicle manufacturers, U.S. Army, NAFTC, Propane Education Research Council, Automotive Research and Design, Automotive Training Group, and many other training facilitators.

Ricky Brown is a Fire and Rescue specialist in Henderson County with 19 years' experience. He is NCDOI Office of the State Fire Marshall Certified in Technical Rescue Extrication and Vehicle Machinery Rescue. Ricky has taught fire and rescue for 10 years.
