Harm Reduction:

An Introduction to the Model and Applications

Presented by Sherin Khan and Sterling Haukom Anderson

Target Audience: Psychiatrist (MD), Psychiatric Nurse (RN), Psychologist (Ph.D) Social Worker (MSW), Mental Health Counselor, Mental Health Therapist, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) and other mental health professionals 


Participants will be introduced to a basic definition of Harm Reduction, its origins & guiding principles. This will be followed by a discussion of how Harm Reduction can be applied to different kinds of change/treatment (i.e., substance use, mental health, diet/exercise, sex, etc.) and how Harm Reduction and other interventions that focus on eliminating behaviors can work together.

Participants will briefly receive tips on how to identify stages of treatment/change in which Harm Reduction can be most beneficial along with examples of specific interventions shown to be helpful during those particular stages. 

Objectives

  • Understand the principles of Harm Reduction
  • Learn how Harm Reduction can be applied to different kinds of services/assistance such as substance abuse treatment, mental health care, physical health, housing, etc.
  • Be able to identify stages of treatment/change in which Harm Reduction is beneficial and what interventions may be helpful in different stages. 

 

Sherin Khan is the Director of Workforce Development for Thresholds and has over 7 years of experience in the field of mental health. She has held both clinical and administrative leadership positions at Thresholds including Senior Clinical Team Leader and Director of Implementation and Initiatives.    

She received her Masters of Social Work degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2012. Ms. Khan excels at project management, process improvement, and relationship building. She has trained extensively on change management and organizational leadership.  Her clinical areas of expertise include cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma, and acceptance and commitment therapy. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sterling Haukom Anderson is the Senior Training Specialist for Workforce Development at Thresholds and has been with the agency for 5 years. During her time at Thresholds, she has held multiple positions including Senior Clinical Team Leader which allowed her to work throughout the entire agency and collaborate with staff at all levels, including clinical and administrative.  Sterling received her Master’s in Counseling from DePaul University in 2012.
