At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) placement criteria and their place in determining appropriate levels of care for Substance Use Disorders (SUD).
  • Discuss current trends in substance use/misuse across the age continuum
  • Understand the best practice guidelines for the care and treatment of Substance Use Disorders (SUD)


This three hour workshop is an overview of the assessment and treatment of Substance Use Disorders (SUD) in 2019. Participants will learn about the latest in substance abuse trends across the country and what has been forecasted for the future. Participants will learn how to assess for and make treatment recommendations, using the American Society of Addition Medicine (ASAM) placement criteria and what best practices should be used in treatment.

About the Presenter: Sarah Briley

Sarah Briley, EdD, LCPC, CADC currently works as the Clinical Service Line Director over the addiction and mental health programs at Amita Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital. Dr. Briley holds a doctorate in Counseling Psychology and has worked in addiction/mental health settings for more than 18 years. Dr. Briley has passion and expertise in various areas including addiction, treatment of complex patients, program development, and supervision.
