Objectives:

  • Articulate the public health importance of preventing homicide and suicide
  • Recognize the contribution of mental health to risk for homicide and suicide
  • Identify screening and assessment approaches for better understanding homicide and suicide risk in patients with mental health

Summary:

Violence to self and others is increasingly a concern for mental health professionals. In 2017, over 47,000 people in the United States died by suicide, and suicide is the second leading cause of death for adolescents and emerging adults. Similarly, over 17,000 people in the United States dies from homicide in 2017, with homicide being the third leading cause of death for adolescents and emerging adults. This training will review the role of mental health professionals in understanding, identifying, and intervening in patients at risk for preventable death by homicide or suicide.

About the Presenter: Jason Washburn

 Jason J. Washburn, Ph.D., ABPP.  Dr. Washburn is a board-certified clinical child and adolescent psychologist.  He is the Director of Graduate Studies for the MA and PhD programs at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and a psychologist at the Center for Childhood Resilience at Lurie Children’s Hospital.  He is the editor of the recently published book, Nonsuicidal Self-Injury: Advanced in Research and Practice.
