Tax Practitioner Institute

HOST:  SCORE MAINE is hosting the Maine Tax Practitioner Institute which is a one-day program in October offered in three separate locations; Augusta, Bangor and Portland.  SCORE Maine also hosts the Maine Tax Forum, a two-day program offered in Augusta in November.  

WHEN & WHERE:  This one-day educational program will be held at three separate locations:

  • Augusta - October 21st       Augusta Civic Center
  • Bangor -   October 23rd      Jeff's Catering Inc., Brewer
  • Portland - October 29th      Fireside Inn & Suites, Portland

What We Offer:

  • Continuing Education, including two hours of Ethics.  Historically, our program has been fully approved by the IRS, the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar, and the Maine Board of Accountanct for CE credits.
  • University of Illinois 2014 Federal Tax Workbook, including Volume A - Update & Ethics, Volume B - Entity and Advanced 1040 Issues, and Volume C  - 1040 Issues.  All three volumes in one convenient book will be provided to each registered attendee. 
  • Presentation by Maine Department of Revenue representatives on 2014 changes to Maine Tax Laws and differences between Maine Tax Law and Federal Tax Law
  • An Ethics panel on Circular 230 and a presentation on the aspirations side of professional ethics.
  • Presentations by area tax professionals on meaningful tax topics, including Capitalization versus Repair, Entity Selection, and the ACA's impact, especially on businesses with fewer than 50 employees.

COST:  $135 for each registrant.  This includes a full lunch, snacks, the University of Illinois 2014 Federal Tax Workbook and CE certificates.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS:

• CPE and CLE credits are available.  

• CPAs - The Maine Board of Accountancy does not certify education providers or pre-approve any courses for continuing education credits. In the past, the Maine Tax Practitioner Institute programs have been accepted by the Board for continuing education credits.    Click here to review the Board of Accountancy rules.  Eight sessions, including six sessions on tax law and updates and two on ethics are offered.

• ATTORNEYS – The Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar approved the 2014 Maine Tax Practitioner Institute  program for 6.67 continuing legal education credits, including 1.67 ethics credits.  

• TAX PROFESSIONALS – The Maine Tax Practitioner Institute is an IRS approved Continuing Education Provider.  The IRS had approved 3 CE credits for Tax Updates, 3 CE credits for Tax Law and 2 CE credits for Ethics.

• IRS CREDITS FOR TAX RETURN PREPARERS - On July 1, 2014, the IRS launched the new Annual Filing Season Program, ("AFSP"). If all requirements are met with regard to AFSP, a Record of Completion will be issued to the tax return preparer by the IRS.  The requirements for 2014 include a prorated amount of approved continuing education.
