York District Chartered Professional Accountants' Association CPD Seminar 

Tax Restructuring, Cloud Computing and Bitcoin

An informative CPD session on Wednesday January 20, 2016 organized by York District Chartered Professional Accountants’ Association (YDCPAA). YDCPAA represents all three legacy accounting professionals: CA, CMA and CGA, which are now unified as one single, strong profession under the banner of Chartered Professional Accountant or CPA (www.yorkcpa.ca).

Three speakers will present on the following topics:

Tax Efficient Structures for Owner-Managed Businesses

by Joseph M. Yukich, CPA, CA, Joseph M Yukich Professional Corporation

Joe will discuss tax efficient structures available for owner-managed businesses. His presentation will include discussion on:

  • Maximizing the capital gains exemption (CGE)
  • Purifying existing non-qualifying structures so shares will qualify for the CGE
  • Keeping shares pure for the CGE without paying personal tax on future profits not reinvested in the business
  • Flexible owner compensation strategies to maximize after-tax cash flow
  • Maximizing income splitting opportunities and maximizing after-tax family cash flow
  • Minimizing and deferring taxes at death

Joe Yukich is a tax specialist who has consulted with numerous Canadian corporations and their shareholders over the past several decades. His experience includes corporate and personal taxes, corporate reorganizations, purchase and sale of a business and other owner-manager issues including estate and succession planning. He was a tax partner at KPMG for numerous years where he serviced owner-managed and other affluent family clients. He now consults to the owner-manager community through other accounting firms.

Cloud Computing Security

An Overview of Bitcoin

Michael will provide an overview of cryptocurrencies including their history and the future of this new technology. Michael will share his expertise on many related topics such as:

  • What are cryptocurrencies?
  • What is blockchain technology?
  • How can blockchains assist the fields of accounting and forensic accounting?
  • What are the benefits to fraud investigations?

Michael Perklin is a blockchain and bitcoin veteran who has worked with the technologies since 2010. With a background in digital forensics and cyber security, Michael consults with bitcoin exchanges and blockchain startups to help them design secure systems and ensure the security of their cryptocurrencies even if their infrastructure gets hacked, or to investigate incidents of fraud or theft of cryptocurrencies, testifying to the digital evidence left behind. Michael helped found the Bitcoin Alliance of Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to bitcoin education and outreach, and the CryptoCurrency Certification Consortium (C4), a non-profit standards organization that has published a variety of blockchain standards including the CryptoCurrency Security Standard which serves as the “PCI of blockchains.” Michael’s expertise has been called upon by a variety of government and industry bodies to bring clarity to issues surrounding these new technologies.
