Stephen Berk Lecture Series 2017
Historic Anniversaries: Events and People that Changed the Course of the World
Congregation Agudat Achim’s Adult Education Committee announces a series of six fascinating lectures with Dr. Stephen Berk, professor of history at Union College and Scholar-in- Residence at Congregation Agudat Achim for more than 30 years.
Come join us this fall for Dr. Stephen Berk’s newest lecture series, Historic Anniversaries: Events and People that Changed the Course of the World.
The dates of all the lectures are: September 18, 25, October 2, 9, 16, and 23.
All lectures will be from 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm and are open to the public. Complete series is $60 and must be purchased before the end of the second lecture. To register send a check with your lecture dates to Jack Mintzer, Director of Education and Programing , Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12309 before September 4th.

I. The Fall of the House of Romanov: In 1913, the Romanov Dynasty celebrated its 300th anniversary; within four years it was overthrown. The reasons for the February revolution are complex and had many repercussions.
II. The Great October: Vladimir Lenin arrived in Petrograd and transformed the political scene. He rode to power on the anarchistic instincts of the diverse masses of the Russian state.
III. America, the Great War, and the Jews: Woodrow Wilson stubbornly resisted bringing the United States into World War I. German bellicosity and one incredible German diplomatic mistake convinced him to enter the war. Jewish Americans had opposed the entry into the war, but swung behind Wilson.
IV. The Balfour Declaration: A mixture of ideology and national interest led Great Britain to endorse the idea of a Jewish national home in Palestine. Personality always counts. Chaim Weitzman and Arthur Balfour made the declaration possible and planted the seeds for the Jewish State, which was created in 1948.
V. 1947, A Year of Change: It was a year of dramatic and consequential decisions. The United Nations National Assembly passes Resolution 181 endorsing the partition of Palestine. The Asian continent experienced tremendous change, and Europe, with the help of the United States, began to recover from the devastation of war.
VI. The Six Day War in Historical Perspective: For some people it looked like another Holocaust was about to occur. Israeli martial prowess, coupled with a lack of competence on the Arab side, led to a stunning Israeli victory. The consequences of the Six Day War were enormous, resonating down to the present day.
