A day to remember

Our members tell us they look forward to attending the annual 'Day at the Races' every year. Enjoy the sport of kings and be treated like a king (and queen)! And don't forget to bring your fanciest hat!

2019 'Day at the Races' July 20 at beautiful Del Mar Race Track in Del Mar, Calif.

'Where the turf meets the surf'

Thoroughbred horse racing excitement in a luxurious sky box!
How do you reward (and retain) your star employees? How do you show your gratitude to that special customer? What have you done lately to show your spouse how much you appreciate them? CalAPA has just the answer -- one of our most popular events, the annual "Day at the Races" at beautiful Del Mar Race Track in Del Mar, Calif. The event will take place on Saturday, July 20. It's a classy way for you to invest in the most important relationships in your life. And who knows? You just might see the next superstar horse in the making. The 2014 Kentucky Derby winner, California Chrome, raced at Del Mar prior to his legendary run for the roses.

The association has reserved a luxury suite at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club for the opening weekend of the  American Pharoah with Victor Espinosa aboard at Del Mar 2014 horseracing season at the seaside track. The "Star Fiddle Skyroom" boasts panoramic views from a private balcony close to the finish line, with its own betting windows, access to grounds, a fabulous lunch buffet, snacks and a no-host bar. The event is family-friendly.

The suite will be open at noon. The first race is at 2 p.m., and runs until about 6 p.m.

Tickets are just $119 per person and must be purchased by July 9. Tickets will be mailed in advance to the person who places the order. Tickets purchased after July 9 will incur additional shipping fees.

The Del Mar Race Track is located on the beach in northern San Diego County, just off Interstate 5. The train is a popular way to travel to the event. Both Amtrak and Coaster (local commuter) trains stop at the nearby Solana Beach station. Del Mar provides a free shuttle (double-decker buses) to and from the track. CalAPA does not provide transportation for this event. Click HERE to visit the Amtrak website for train schedule information. Click HERE for transportation information.

Don't delay! Last year's event sold out quickly. Space is limited and tickets for this event will be on a first-come, first served basis, and pre-registration is required. For information on this event, please contact Sophie You of CalAPA at 916-791-5044. Please note: When you register please include the mailing address where you want the tickets sent.

Del Mar, "Where the turf meets the surf," is not only one of the most scenic race tracks in the world, it's also rich with history, with new and exciting chapters being written each year. The list of celebrities who have frequented Del Mar is longer than a furlong, and people-watching is half the fun. In 2014, the CalAPA-sponsored race was won by a 2-year -old, Lord Nelson, trained by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who was photographed in the winner's circle with CalAPA representatives Holly Mendell and John Michaik from California Commercial Asphalt (In the photo to the right, Baffert is standing to the left at the CalAPA-sponsored race). Baffert went on to be the trainer of 2015 Triple Crown champion, American Pharoah (pictured above right at Del Mar in 2014 with Triple Crown jockey Victor Espinosa aboard). Baffert has also trained 2018's turf sensation, Triple Crown winner Justify, an undefeated chesnut colt that also trained and raced in California. Join us July 20 and maybe you'll get to see the next chapter of horse-racing history written for yourself!
