Jean-Benoit (JB) Morin is Full Professor at the Faculty of Sport Sciences (Université Côte d’Azur, Nice, France), and a member of the Laboratory of Human Motor Function, Expertise Sport and Health. He is also an associate researcher with the Sports Research Institute New-Zealand (SPRINZ) at Auckland University of Technology. He obtained a Track & Field Coach National Diploma in 1998 and a Ph.D. in Human Locomotion and Performance in 2004. JB’s field of research is mainly human locomotion and performance, with specific interest in running biomechanics and maximal power movements (sprint, jumps). He is a research director, and has edited a textbook (Biomechanics of Training and Testing, 2018) and published over 110 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He teaches locomotion and sports biomechanics, and strength assessment. He is also a consultant for professional sports groups in soccer, rugby, sprint, and other power-speed sports. He practiced soccer for 10 years, practiced and coached track and field (middle distance and 400m hurdles) for eight years, and he is now enjoying trail running and triathlon.

Resisted and Assisted Sprint Training: What, Why, How?

JB Morin & Jonas Dodoo

This workshop will be an equal blend of theory and practical application, combining the experiences of Dr. JB Morin and Jonas Dodoo. The focus topic will be the development of mechanical power and its transfer to sprinting.

In the theory section JB will discuss the background science including his recent collaborations with applied researchers like Matt Cross and Johan Lahti. JB’s exciting research group are involved in interesting work on resisted and assisted training, the specific effects on the FV profile and whether it has an impact on the actual sprint pattern. Specific topics to be discussed will revolve around the kinetics of heavy sled-induced performance and mechanical changes.

The practical session will be coached by Jb and Jonas and will be an immersive practical session focused on the development of acceleration.  Participants will have the opportunity to both observe but also be coached in order to learn the heuristics behind error detection and correction, coaching cues, resistance selection for maximal power and session design for acceleration and speed development.

Attendees will be invited to take part in case studies on the day where speed and video data will be collected & analysed using the MySprint app, then synthesised by both Jb and Jonas. The last hour of the workshop will be a Q&A opportunity with our panel guests, discussing all things speed and power with a focus on team sports.
