Understanding
Generational Patterns of Parenting

The impact of trauma
on caregiver/child relationships and a
ttachment

Parenting is never easy. As professionals working with parents/caregivers it is important to understand some of the challenges present in generational patterns of parenting. These challenges include:

  • The transmission of trauma from one generation to another
  • Adult Attachment challenges
  • The lifecycle of parenting
  • The importance of addressing survival needs and immediate crisis before addressing sensitive, underlying trauma and unexplored issues

Through building healthy communication habits, modeling characteristics of self-aware adults, and providing concrete tools and strategies, you can build confidence for restore hope for parents/caregivers.

Training participants will:

1. Learn about the Adult Attachment Interview

2. View parenting struggles through an intergenerational attachment lens

3. Through new insight generate optimism for providing guidance for parents/caregivers who struggle with trauma and attachment issues from their childhood

4. Understand the benefits of finding mentors who help to fill in childhood gaps, and the importance of positive peer influences in setting new patterns 

4. Learn tools and strategies to help parents/caregivers experience healthy connections

This training is appropriate for professionals working with parents and caregivers of children of any age. Including: parent educators, family advocates, social workers, therapists and counselors, teachers, childcare providers and healthcare providers. 

Attendees from outside San Luis Obispo County are welcome!

Training instructor: Ron Huxley, LMFT

Ron Huxley, LMFT is a noted child and family therapist, speaker and blogger who helps families in need of hope and restoration in his San Luis Obispo County. 

Ron has worked in several systems of care, including community-based mental health, child therapy clinics, wraparound, County mental health, private psychotherapy practice, and faith-based counseling/coaching services. He has certifications in various clinical evidence-based and promising practices: EMDR, Incredible Years, Family Wellness, Love & Logic, S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting), TheraPlay, Love After Marriage, and Developmental Dyadic Psychotherapy (attachment-focused family therapy).

Ron’s areas of expertise includes attachment, adoption/permanency, trauma-informed care, parenting, and nontraditional family therapies.
