Lorenza Holt, MPH, BCCE, BDT(DONA) Lorenza has her MPH degree with a concentration in maternal and child health, is a BACE-certified childbirth educator, DONA approved birth doula trainer and Spinning Babies Approved Trainer. She has been a birth advocate in the Boston area for over 25 years. Passionate about normal birth, Lorenza has supported hundreds of laboring women and has trained and mentored dozens of doulas for the Cambridge Doula Program and the Boston Medical Center Birth Sisters Program. For many years Lorenza also taught childbirth education classes in ways that encouraged  and stimulated participants to embrace the powerful, beautiful and magical experience of birth.

DO YOU WORK WITH FAMILIES DURING THE CHILDBEARING YEAR?

Designed for those who want to learn the fundamentals of childbirth

Perfect for new doula and childbirth education trainees, home visitors, family advocates, social workers, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, yoga instructors,  community health workers and others who support women and their families during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

If you are a CHW working with childbearing families and would like to learn more about the labor and birth process, or more about medical interventions and complications in the labor process, this workshop is for you!

This workshop has been approved by DONA International to meet one of the requirements for certification as a birth doula. (Other requirements to be met for   DONA certification).

This day of learning will cover the following topics:

  • Anatomy and physiology of pregnancy: The role of the uterus, hormones, pelvic structures and soft tissues
  • Pregnancy from the baby’s perspective, including the placenta and overview of fetal development
  • The physiologic process of labor and birth
  • Pain mechanisms and how comfort measures disrupt these
  • Hands on practicing of comfort measures for labor
  • Overview of common complications of labor and birth, including going past the due date, prolonged labors, and fetal distress
  • Overview of common pharmacological pain relief methods
  • Overview of common medical interventions
  • The first hour after birth and initiation of breastfeeding

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS: BACE-NMC: 7.5 contact hours. Approved by DONA International to meet one of the requirements for certification as a birth doula. Meets criteria of the Comm. of MA  Board of Nursing regulations: (244 CMR, section 5:00) for continuing education for nursing re-licensure for 7.5 contact hours.

REFUND POLICY: Refunds will be granted up to 2 weeks before the start of the course. Doulas and midwives called to a birth can notify us (phone or email) the day of the workshop for a refund less a $40 administrative fee.
