MAIAAI October 2021 Annual 3-Day Seminar


 The MAIAAI is pleased to announce our annual 3-day seminar being held October 13th-15th at Red Jacket Beach Resort in Yarmouth, Ma.

Detective Barry Grimm served as a police officer in the Middletown Township, N.J. Police Department for 37 years, prior to his retirement in 2008. Barry attained the rank of Detective First Class in the Major crimes Unit; in addition, he was a forensic identification specialist and fire/arson investigator for the Department. Detective Grimm provided technical, photographic and laboratory assistance in almost every significant investigation, including homicides, sudden deaths, burglaries, narcotics offenses and fire investigations. Since 1985, Barry has been an Adjunct Instructor for The National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD., teaching numerous courses offered in the Arson Curriculum, specifically Interview/Interrogation Courtroom Techniques, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) as a subject matter expert in the redevelopment of the former Fire/Arson course offered at the National Fire Academy, and has been one of the primary instructors since the initial offering in July 2007.

Detective Grimm has been an SME to rewrites of both Forensic Evidence and Interview Interrogation Courtroom having taught the initial offerings courses. Barry has appeared on CFTtrainer.net and is an SME in the IAAI evidence curriculum and is also found in the IAAI First Responder Video. Barry has provided training courses and has spoken at numerous training seminars and conferences across the country. Barry further has recently (March 2017) participated on a steering committee reviewing the entire Fire Anson Curriculum at National Fire Academy and discussing, among many other things, “best practices” for the Academy moving forward, improving the education of fire investigators. 

Barry Grimm is the Past President of the New Jersey Chapter of the IAAI and the T&E Chair. Barry served as a Director at the International level and is Past President of the International IAAI. Barry is a former Fire Chief of the Middletown Twp. Volunteer Fire Department, on of the largest volunteer fire departments in the country, consisting of 330 active members operating out of 11 stations, serving a population of over 85,000.


Dixon Robin is a recently retired Supervisory Special Agent/Certified Fire Investigator with the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).  Based out of Rochester, New York. Dixon has been a Supervisor with ATF’s National Response Team since 2017. In this role, Dixon leads a veteran team of ATF Special Agents and subject matter experts in responding to large fire and explosion events throughout the United States to investigate potential violations of Federal and state arson and explosives laws.  

Dixon has been employed in Federal law enforcement for over 24 years. Following stints as a Special Agent with both the National Science Foundation’s Office of Inspector General and NASA’s Office of Inspector General, Dixon joined ATF in 1998.   In 2003, Dixon entered ATF’s CFI program and was assigned a position in the ATF Rochester, NY Field Office. Dixon worked daily with the Rochester Arson Task Force which not only responded to assist in processing fire scenes but also concentrated on the State and Federal investigation/prosecution of arson- and explosives-related crimes.  During this time, Dixon joined ATF’s National Response Team, eventually becoming a full time member in 2015.

In addition to being the President for NYSIAAI, Dixon is a member of NIST’s OSAC Fire and Explosion Investigation subcommittee.  Dixon has taught and coordinated several courses on fire investigation throughout New York, the United States, and overseas.  Dixon was assigned as an ATF Project Officer at the National Fire Academy (NFA) and has taught there numerous times.  

Dixon holds a BA (History) and an MA (Forensics – Crime in Commerce) from The George Washington University.  In addition, Dixon is an IAAI Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) and Certified Instructor (CI).
