Burnout, Secondary Trauma, & Personal Self-Care

While burnout and secondary trauma are becoming more frequently discussed in the field of social services and trauma work, symptoms of each often go unrecognized or mislabeled. This presentation seeks to clarify the continuum of reactions that trauma workers and other helpers and healers may experience due to exposure to secondary and primary trauma in their work. Participants will learn risk contributors to developing burnout and secondary traumatic stress, as well as mitigating factors. A range of self-care domains will be discussed, including conceptualizing self-care in alignment with Dr. Siegel’s Healthy Mind Platter (Siegel, 2011). The facilitator will guide participants through several experiential activities including a chair yoga demonstration, breathing exercises, guided meditation, and development of an individualized self-care plan using SMART goals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to distinguish between concepts of Burnout, Secondary Traumatic Stress, Vicarious Trauma, and Compassion Fatigue
  • Participants will learn to identify symptoms of Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress and the impact on our professional and personal lives
  • Participants will learn individual self-care strategies for preventing and mitigating the effects of Secondary Traumatic stress
  • Participants will be able to develop an individualized self-care plan

Trainer: L. Faye Perkins, LISW-S, CTP-C, Laura “Faye” Perkins is a Behavioral Health Consultant who provides education to Children’s Services staff to promote best practices in meeting the behavioral health needs of clients, and to support child welfare staff who are vulnerable to burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Faye believes that empowering helpers and healers through education about the impact of secondary trauma exposure, as well as the buffering effects of self-care, promotes resilience and retention of our greatest resource – the people who serve vulnerable populations. Faye has over 18 years of social services experience, including over 12 years experience in Children’s Services Hamilton County Job and Family Services, where she was recognized as an outstanding frontline worker. She has received commendations from the Department of Veterans Affairs for her advocacy in cultural competency in treating Veterans who identify as LGBTQ+. Faye is certified in Trauma Responsive Care through the Tristate Trauma Network, and she is a Certified Trauma Practitioner-Clinical. Faye has trained Hamilton County Job and Family Services staff and Central Clinic Behavioral Health staff in areas of trauma, trauma-responsive care, secondary trauma, and self-care strategies. Faye is a Licensed Independent Social Worker with supervisory designation, and she enjoys incorporating her training in mindfulness and yoga into training and consultation. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Kentucky and a Master’s degree in Social Work, with an emphasis on child and adolescent trauma, from Northern Kentucky University.
