Understanding and Supporting Trauma Victims as a Legal Professional 

Description: Trauma victims present with a variety of emotional and behavioral symptoms that can be difficult to understand and navigate in the attorney -client relationship.  In fact, unless the client is seeking legal assistance for a particular trauma they’ve experienced, it can be hard to identify the client as a trauma victim. In this workshop, legal professionals will learn about the elements of a traumatic experience and the short and long-term effects it may have on individuals. They will learn the prevalence of trauma as well as the neuroscience behind trauma and its effects. Finally, participants will learn some strategies for engaging with and supporting trauma victims within the attorney-client relationship.

Agenda: 

12:00-12:15 – Trauma definition, elements, and examples

12:15-12:30 – ACEs study; Trauma prevalence in general population

12:30-12:45 – Neuroscience of trauma and its effects (brain changes and differences and how this translates into behavior presentations)

12:45-1:00 – Strategies for engaging with and supporting trauma victims who seek legal services, using principles of trauma-informed care

Speaker: Melissa Adamchik, MA, LPP, is the Executive Director of the Tristate Trauma Network since its formation in 2015.  Melissa has her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Spalding University in Louisville and is licensed as a Psychological Practitioner in KY.   She has 16 years of experience as a practicing mental health therapist, and 14 years of consulting and training experience.  Prior to her position at the TTN,  Melissa served as an Ohio Regional Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist, covering a five-county region in Southwest Ohio and based at Child Focus, Inc.  She also worked as an Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist and Coordinator of Early Childhood Mental Health Services at NorthKey Community Care for 7 years.  Although her focus was Early Childhood Mental Health for several years, she has worked with clients of all ages in community mental health settings and schools.  Melissa has received extensive training in trauma and its effects on individuals and is passionate about helping people who have experienced trauma.
