DBT Advanced Techniques and Strategies

The Tristate Trauma Network is bringing back Nikki Winchester, Psy.D., ABPP, DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician™ from the Cincinnati Center for DBT to provide a workshop focused on particular techniques and strategies utilized in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).  DBT is the empirically-supported, manualized treatment developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., ABPP, to treat clients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), emotion dysregulation, suicidality and self-harm, and/or interpersonal difficulties.

This workshop is designed as a continuation of the two-day DBT workshop hosted in January but can also serve as a stand-alone workshop; participants of this workshop are not required to have attended the January workshop.  The primary target audience for this workshop are mental health clinicians who are interested in learning about techniques and strategies utilized in DBT, or for those familiar with the model, getting a refresher of and practice with specific DBT techniques and strategies.  The primary method of learning will be the “teach one, see one, do one” approach, emphasizing participants’ practice of the techniques during the workshop.

The focus of this workshop is on DBT strategies as applied to adults, though participants will likely be able to generalize the material to adolescents.  This workshop is just one component of the training needed to develop full competence to provide DBT treatment.  Although clinicians cannot claim to be intensively trained DBT clinicians following this workshop, the workshop can provide clinicians with DBT strategies and techniques to use in DBT-informed sessions.

Workshop Objectives: By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

1. list and describe reciprocal and irreverent communication strategies.

2. effectively observe and communicate personal limits.

3. list and describe dialectical strategies.

4. articulate how to utilize the DBT diary card.

5. utilize the DBT target hierarchy to structure an individual session.

6. describe the structure and function of phone coaching in DBT.
