Fees- Trail Horse Retreat Weekend $625.00 per rider (includes camp site with full hook up, stall, entire week of horsemanship, trail riding and group activities/tour) & farrier for any needed repairs during the week. You may pay by check or credit card.

Weekend Schedule:

-Trail Horse Retreat designed to help develop the trail horse. Build confidence in both horse & rider.

Riders may arrive on Wednesday to get set up.

Thursday through Saturday- trail riding workshops.

Group Tour day will be selected on site and based on weather.

Wednesday @ 7:00pm-Meet & Greet Campfire Social with snacks & lots of conversation.

Group Potluck Dinner (tbd)

Sunday- departure day

The Story........

The Lumber River has a long history of economic significance for the towns that are located along its banks. Deriving its name from the extensive timber harvesting and transporting done in the late 1700s, the river is the primary reason why the towns along its banks were settled.

Princess Ann, the bluff on which the park's current headquarters are located, was chartered in 1796 as the second town in Robeson County. It was also the first inland town established by settlers traveling up the Lumber River from South Carolina. Settlers established the town on the bluff because they knew it would not be flooded and because the area provided an excellent landing along the river. The town is preserved now only as the name of the road that leads to the river.

Trail riding and fun group activities are planned throughout the weekend.

Ecology-

A rich diversity of plants is found in and along the Lumber River as it winds from the sandhills to the coastal plain. Wildflowers including mountain laurel, wild azalea, swamp mallow, spider lily and native wisteria can be seen from the river. Bald cypress, tulip poplar, river birch and water elm are found in the swamp forest. Several rare plants, including sarvis holly and Carolina bogmint, grow along the river.

A canoe trip down the river, a quiet walk along the river's edge or an overnight camping trip in the park provides unique opportunities to see the abundance of wildlife on the river. Look ahead of your canoe to see a great blue heron, belted kingfisher or spotted sandpiper flying low over the dark water. Perhaps you will catch a glimpse of a beaver or a river otter. Fall asleep to the sound of barred owls and wake up to prothonotary warblers announcing a new day.

Horseman & Clinician Joe Most & his horse Tuff will be assisting riders and their horse with skills to improve their communication & relationship throughout the week.

What to expect-

This Location offers many amenities including rv hook ups & stalls/pens for the horses. Wifi, Nice bathroom & shower house.

Daily there will be educational trail riding workshops offered for participants that will provide advancement in all areas of horsemanship including trail riding and navigating obstacles (obstacle course on grounds). These workshops will inspire you to try new things with your horse and be creative in your horsemanship. Each horse is different and may need a different approach to reach the desired goals of the rider. Our goal is to help you to develop your horsemanship program.

PARTICIPATION - Pre-Registration is required. This Retreat is designed for those who wish to improve their enjoyment and safety while trail riding. Feel at home with a group of supportive like minded riders.

-Please do not bring a horse that has never been outside an arena or show ring. Horses must have had at least some trail experience prior to the Retreat. If you or your horse have had no trail riding experience, contact PPE for information about what you can do to prepare to participate in a Trail Ride Clinic.

We have a group visit planned to the Carolina Opry for their 2018 Christmas Show!

Group activities during the weekend include a meet & greet social and a group potluck dinner. Campfire Chats in the evenings. Obstacle course on site!
