Program Description:
Aging presents many challenges which are likely to provoke multi-generational financial and emotional strain if preparations have not been made in advance. Dr. McClanahan will discuss preventative practices to help elders and their children deal with the inevitable transitions elders face. Adriana Alex from Sage Eldercare will describe the range of services provided by geriatric care professionals, as well as provide an overview of the range of retirement community options here in the Bay Area. Finally, estate planning attorney Elizabeth Kravatsy will discuss changing family dynamics and the opportunities presented by well-conceived family meetings. By the end of the session, attendees will understand how to comfortably discuss these issues with clients and prepare clients for these important life changes.

S    Speaker Bios:
Carolyn McClanahan, M.D., CFP®, Founder, Life Planning Partners, Inc.
Dr. McClanahan began her career as a physician in 1990 after completing her undergraduate degree at Mississippi University for Women and medical school at University of Mississippi. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. After a couple of years in private practice and emergency medicine practice in Richmond, Virginia, she returned to the Sunny South of Jacksonville, Florida to teach on faculty at the University of Florida, Shands, Jacksonville.  She also worked in various emergency departments in the Jacksonville area.

Finding that most financial planners were mainly interested in managing her portfolio and not in providing the advice she needed, she enrolled in the CFP® curriculum at the University of North Florida. Realizing the similarities between medicine and financial planning, and feeling more empowered by being able to help people plan for their future, Dr. McClanahan decided to make a career change into financial planning.

In addition to her financial life planning practice, Dr. McClanahan provides education to financial planners and health care professionals on the interplay between health and financial issues, particularly regarding insurability, health care costs, and health care reform. She writes for Forbes, CNBC, and Financial Planning Magazine covering issues intersecting money and medicine.

Dr. McClanahan is a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA,) the Financial Planning Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. She has previously served on the National Board of NAPFA and is quoted regularly in numerous publications such as The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and the Washington Post.  She has also appeared on CNBC, Hardball, AC360, and NPR.

Adriana Alex, MAG, CAC, Sage Eldercare
Ariana grew up having strong relationships with many elders in her family and community. She has always had a passion for helping others, so it is no surprise that she has chosen a career working with older adults and their families.

In her current role as the Director of Care Management Services, Ariana works closely with Nina Herndon, Sage Eldercare Founder and Executive Director, as well as with the Sage Care Management team to ensure positive outcomes for clients and their families.

Ariana began her work at Sage as the Director of Home Care. She created a strong home care program which focuses on providing quality care and meaningful engagement. She is trained as a Positive Approach to Care Trainer (CPT) and trains Sage home care providers in this specialized dementia training program based on Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care philosophy. Previously, Ariana worked at Coventry Park Assisted Living Community in San Francisco as the Director of The Memory Enhancement Program and Associate Director of Assisted Living. She has direct experience in creating and conducting activities for older adults, especially those with memory loss. In her role at Coventry Park, she provided on-going support and guidance to family members who were experiencing the challenges associated with memory loss. Ariana earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in gerontology from the University of San Francisco (USF). While studying at USF she participated in inter-generational research with the FROMM Institute for Lifelong Learning.  She completed her master’s degree in gerontology from San Francisco State University and was awarded the Michelle Benjamin Scholarship. Ariana is a member of the Aging Life Care Association (ALCA) and a certified care manager (CMC).

Elizabeth Krivatsy, Esq., Law Offices of Elizabeth Krivatsy, APC

Elizabeth Krivatsy is an Estate Planning attorney with offices in Corte Madera. A graduate of Hastings College of the Law, she has practiced law for over 25 years. She is a teacher first – helping people to make good choices to safeguard themselves and their families. She has spent years helping older adults and their families plan for the future. Done well, the family meeting can create and sustain family conversations about all the things no one wants to talk about – “When is assisted living necessary?” “What values should guide our end of life care?” “What financial resources are available to care for us?” “Where do we keep our important documents?” “Who gets what when we’re gone and why?” An effective meeting can help the family prepare for an independent and interdependent future – and, most importantly, it can prevent future disputes and hard feelings among family members.

Elizabeth lives in Sausalito with her husband, Adam. They have a rescue cat named Max. She’s an avid reader, loves music of all kinds, and enjoys hiking, gardening, and baking with her grandchildren.
