Best Practices Training for Educators
December 13th and 14th, 8:30-3:30
Learn how to implement Maine Family Planning's updated Best Practices in STI/HIV and Pregnancy Prevention curriculum in this 2-day, in-person training! Gain the knowledge, comfort level, and skills to teach this 10 lesson curriculum with supplemental lessons and an accompanying virtual classroom. The Best Practices curriculum is aligned with the Maine Learning Results for Health Education and the National Sex Education Standards. The contents and format of the curriculum addresses the sexual health needs of youth ages 13-18.
During this training, participants will:

Explore specific lessons and activities on topics such as: healthy relationships, communication and consent, decision-making, sexual and reproductive anatomy, STI prevention, barrier methods, birth control and pregnancy prevention, human sexual response and intimacy, sexual orientation and gender identity, and accessing services and support.

Understand what Maine youth want from their sexual health education.

Practice using LGBTQ+ inclusive language and content.

Increase comfort level and demonstrate skills in delivering lessons on sexual health topics.

Identify and practice responding to student questions.
- Share tools, activities, and resources with other educators who are teaching sexual health in Maine.
Who should attend?
Maine school- and community-based educators committed to providing sexual health education to youth ages 13-18.
What is the cost?
Thanks to support from the Maine Department of Education, all costs for participants are covered, including: registration, mileage, and substitute reimbursement. Participants will also be provided with a hard copy of the Best Practices curriculum along with other resources and supplies needed to deliver the curriculum. Participants who attend both sessions will receive a certificate for 12 contact hours of training.
Overnight lodging is available upon request if traveling more than 1-1/2 hrs one-way.
