Teaching Sexual Health in Middle School

Training Description:

Learn how to implement Maine Family Planning's 2022 edition of the Middle School Sexual Health Scope & Sequence. This flexible sexual health resource meets the varying needs of the middle school health educator serving grades 6-8. The scope and sequence tool allows middle school educators to “choose their own adventure” in selecting age-appropriate lessons and activities based on the topics they have identified for their grade 6 - 8 students. The curriculum resource is aligned with Maine and national health education standards and includes lesson plans on these topics: puberty & adolescent sexual development, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation and identity, healthy relationships, interpersonal violence, consent & communication, and sexual health.

During the training, participants will:
  • Understand the content and methods recommended for a middle school sexual health program.
  • Practice how to identify and access specific activities and lesson plans within the Middle School Scope & Sequence that meet the needs of your middle school health classes.
  • Share resources and network with educators teaching middle school health  from around the state.
  • Create a customized scope & sequence plan for delivering sexual health lessons to your middle school students grades 6-8.
  • Leave with digital copies of the Middle School Sexual Health Scope & Sequence curriculum that will provide a foundation for middle school youth to develop into sexually healthy teens.
