Last month, at a resort on the Bay of Biscay and on the margins of the G7 Summit, President Trump and Prime Minister Abe announced that they had come to an understanding on the elements of a new U.S.-Japan trade agreement.  Among those elements are market openings in Japan for U.S. agriculture, giving U.S. producers the same opportunities in Japan as those enjoyed by producers in the EU and CPTPP countries like Australia and Canada; provisions on digital trade; and some relaxation of U.S. industrial tariffs for products from Japan.  The two leaders said they expected to sign the agreement during the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York, now in progress.  

On September 26, GBD will look more closely at what the promised agreement is likely to include and its importance to the affected sectors.  We shall do that with help from ...
