2019 Annual Conference

The Annual Conference this year will be September 26-28, 2019 at the Brazos County Expo Center.  Please make your plans to attend.

This year’s class schedules are better than ever!  We know you are going to enjoy this years’ conference, the classes, the comradery, our vendors and of course the food. We are providing you with three outstanding training paths this year.  We apologize ahead of time because we know that your head will spin from just trying to figure out which classes you want to attend.

TRACK 1 – Friday and Saturday

Post Tension Institute Level 1 Unbonded Post Tension Course  #36667

Post-tensioning is a method of reinforcing (strengthening) concrete or other materials with high-strength steel strands or bars, typically referred to as tendons. This method is commonly used in residential construction throughout Texas and across the Nation.

This 2-day workshop provides you with a professional certification after passing the exam that is included at the end of this class. The class will outline the basic body of knowledge that should be possessed by all personnel involved in the installation and inspection of single strand unbonded post-tensioning (PT) systems for elevated structures. It also serves as an effective introduction for personnel new to post-tensioning, while at the same time providing support and organization for experienced persons.

By attending this two-day class, you will be given the opportunity to take their certification exam at the class. Once you pass the exam, you will receive your Post Tension Institute Level 1 Unbonded PT Installation Certification that will qualify you to perform pre-pour foundation inspections.

Post Tension books will be provided in the class to those attending.

TRACK 2 – Friday

2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) Training #36714

This 8-hour class will teach the attendees about the 2018 IECC and prepare the attendees to schedule to sit for the IECC exam to obtain their IECC Code Certification.  Subject matter will include relevant issues in real estate inspections or topics that support the home inspector’s development of skill and competence. This class will be taught by Shirley Ellis who is an expert in the energy codes, she also sits on the ICC Code Council Board and is a Professor at Texas A&M.

You will need to purchase your 2018 IECC book from www.ICCSAFE.org and bring this to the class.

TRACK 3 – Friday

Stairs, Steps, Railings, Handrails and More taught by the Stairway Manufacturers Association #36715

The SMA was formed in 1988as the Stairway Manufacturers’ Association to insure the growth and prosperity of our industry and craft. The issues central to the charter members focused upon defending arbitrary changes in the building codes and providing essential funding for scientific research and testing in stairway safety. SMA research is used to fairly establish empirical changes in stair, handrail, and guard codes, setting an example for valid code reform.

SMA Visual Interpretations of the Stair Building Codes have been published since 2001 as a tool for building officials, design professionals, contractors, and others in the industry. These graphic interpretations bring clarity to the written code and provide a well-accepted, consistent understanding.

This 8-hour class will teach the attendees advanced training concerning the various types of stairs, guard rails, handrails and construction methods that you will utilize in your everyday inspections. You will leave this class packed full of information and materials that you can reference.

Dave Cooper will be your instructor and has been with the SMA Association since 2009.  He began building stairs in 1973 and has founded three companies within the Stair Industry related to the design and manufacture of stairs. As an SMA member he served on the board of directors, as SMA Code and Research Chair, and as President. Dave provides code consultation for our members and represents the association in code & standard development.
