Meet this year's speaker - Kouri Marshall!

Kouri C. Marshall is a proven leader, mentor, and community activist, driven by his own personal motto: “Character and consistency.”

Born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, Kouri has served as a political strategist, adviser and director for organizations, campaigns and projects ranging from the local to national level. He attended Trewyn for Pre-K, Harrison Primary School for four years, Trewyn Middle School and Von Steuben Middle School for 7th and 8th grade, and graduated from Woodruff High School.

In 2010, he was chosen to be the District of Columbia’s State Director for President Obama’s re-election campaign. In 2015, he was appointed as the Executive Director of Democratic GAIN, a progressive political association with 42,000 members. Kouri was also the campaign manager for D.C. Councilwoman Anita Bonds’ first campaign in 2013, winning the crowded race by 10 points.  After leading the Councilwoman to victory, he joined the professional staff of DC Councilmember Tommy Wells as his Senior Advisor.

Kouri has traveled the country as the Midwestern Regional Director for the Truman National Security Project, helping to organize and train progressive candidates on issues of national security and foreign policy. In 2015, Kouri was selected to represent the United States on a trip to Australia by the American Council of Young Political Leaders.

Inspired by the spirit of giving, Kouri hosted annual toy drives for low-income children in D.C.. This would later be the catalyst for toy drives in Chicago and laid the foundation for ChiGivesBack, Inc., which started as a toy drive and has blossomed into a multi-faceted philanthropic entity. As the co-founder and Board Chairman for ChiGivesBack, Inc, Kouri and his team are focused on supporting low-income families, residents suffering from homelessness, and the ‘working poor.’ Kouri served in the executive office of Governor JB Pritzker, working on a range of issues including to diversify state agencies and facilitating the appointments process.

Kouri graduated from Eureka College - President Ronald Reagan's alma mater - where he was elected as the first African American Homecoming King in the 150-year history of the college. The Eureka College Board of Trustees and Alumni Board named Kouri as the 2013 Eureka College Outstanding Young Alumnus of the Year. He is now a member of the college’s Board of Trustees.

Kouri was a member of the University of Chicago’s Civic Leadership Academy class of 2018 and traveled to New Dehli, India with his cohort to exchange ideas on effective government and eradicating poverty.

Kouri is the recipient of Campaigns & Elections Magazine’s 2016 Rising Star award– one of the political industry’s most prestigious honors. He is a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s Young Professionals Board of Directors and sits on the Loyola Hospital Chicago Gun Violence Committee. Kouri received his Masters in Public Administration at Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he was a Graduate Student Ambassador at the U.S. Senator Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.

Kouri resides in Chicago, IL with his fiancée Dr. Kayla Nixon.
