Rhode Stand - healthy food will make you grow!

Join the Rhode Island PBS Kids Club, in partnership with Farm Fresh Rhode Island, Johnson & Wales University, Rhode Island Academy of Nutrition and DieteticsSouthside Community Land Trust, and Tatutina, as we bring children together for Rhode Stand - healthy food will make you grow!

Parents, guardians, grandparents! On Saturday, May 2, your child age 4 and up is invited to come to the Rhode Island PBS studios to experience hands on demonstrations. Using all five senses, children will touch, smell, see, hear, and taste their way through a variety of age-appropriate activities all centered around how produce grows. Children will commemorate the learning experience by engaging in one final activity of their choice: making an art project, or recording a video diary, or creating a healthy menu.

FUN FOR ALL CHILDREN

Farm Fresh Rhode Island

Vegetables are Plant Parts We Eat!
Children will have the opportunity to learn about vegetables as different parts of a growing plant through interactive and experiential learning opportunities.

FIrst Session (Children ages 4-7)
Farm Fresh RI staffers will read Tops & Bottoms aloud to children as they explore the different ways vegetables grow. Then children will have the opportunity to “harvest” fruits and vegetables in our interactive garden space or create a plant parts coloring activity.

Second session (children ages 8-11)
Children will participate in a plant parts trivia game.  Following trivia, children will have the opportunity to “harvest” fruits and vegetables in our interactive garden space or create a plant parts coloring.

Southside Community Land Trust

Snap peas will be the focus, easy to plant, quick growing, and kids love them! Children will be able to taste raw snap peas, and try pea tendrils right off of a plant!  We'll also "plant" carrots (provided courtesy of Whole Foods University Heights) that the children can "harvest."

Johnson & Wales University

Culinary experts and student chefs will help children prepare some of the fresh vegetables on hand that day, plus children will also get to create and taste some healthy snacks!

THEN CHOOSE ONE FINAL PROJECT:

ART PROJECT with Tatutina
Children will choose their own produce bag to decorate and take home to use on their next trip to the farmer's market!

or

VIDEO DIARY with Rhode Island PBS
Children will be asked a few questions about what they learned during the event. Their answers will be captured on film and aired during children's programming on Rhode Island PBS!

or

HEALTHY MENU with Nurturing Nutrition, LLC
Under the guidance of pediatric dietitians from Nurturing Nutrition, LLC, children will create a fun and healthy menu, perfect to take home and help make their next meal in the kitchen (with supervision, of course)!

This event is free but space is limited and RSVPs are first come, first served.

Rhode Stand is made possible by Jackson National Life Insurance and the Corner Bakery Café.
