Dr. Paul Martin, consultant, WorkPlaceMentalHelp. In addition to consulting with a wide variety of organizations around issues such as medications, evaluations and treatment of the child and adolescent population as well as the adult mental health population, this business provides informative and timely interactive training seminars for social services, law enforcement, probation/parole, businesses, elementary and secondary school personnel, colleges and universities regarding mental health issues, stress and violence in the workplace and adolescent violence. We are under contract with the Ohio Institute of Human Services and the eight regional training centers throughout Ohio, and also provide services for most of the 62 county-based social services agencies throughout New York State.
Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Disorders
Ten to fifteen percent of children/adolescents between the ages of 8 – 17 years old exhibit serious emotional disturbance with substantial functional impairment caused by mental illness. Another five to nine percent suffer severe emotional disturbance with extreme functional impairment caused by mental illness. When we focus strictly on those who receive social services, the percentage easily doubles.
In this workshop we will discuss in depth the signs and symptoms of the most commonly seen psychiatric disorders (Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Bipolar Disorder in children, Major Depression in children, Post Traumatic stress disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder). We will discuss atypical behaviors that would suggest that a preadolescent child (ages 5-10) may have a mental health issue. In addition, we will cover additional behaviors that would suggest needing to seek help for pre-teens/adolescents (11-20 years old). Steps that a caseworker should take to assist the family in obtaining an accurate diagnosis will be explored. Time permitting, we will also discuss the most commonly used psychiatric medications.
