Your Trainer:

Stephen Smith, for the past 41 years, Steve has had multiple careers. He was a teacher, baseball coach, writer and director of videos, films and interactive media, and VP of sales and speaker. However, ask him what he does and he’ll say “I’m a father, husband, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.” It’s this concept of “family” that has created his passion to help others understand the issues surrounding technology and social media. He has spoken to over 300,000 students, parents, doctors, nurses and business people -- and written over 100 videos, articles  and most recently a book on the subject of “Your digital tattoo.” Steve enjoys photography, camping from coast-to-coast with his wife Mary Beth; two dogs and “grandpeeps.” In his spare time Steve received a BFA from the University of Cincinnati; an M.A.Ed. from Xavier University; ECLM from the University of Notre Dame and an MCIM from the University of San Francisco.

Social Media Safety: Your Child’s Digital Tattoo

The Social Media: Your Child’s Digital Tattoo program helps parents, educators, community members and other professionals understand the issues related to social media and mental health. Since the release of the iPhone, teen depression has risen 70% in our area -- and throughout the US. Sadly, based on our research, 50% of parents have no restrictions on the use of technology in the home. This leads to increased use -- which then often leads to depression and anxiety. Additionally, nearly 20% of young teens in Greater Cincinnati send naked photos of themselves. This is not only illegal, it creates issues with depression -- but also can create issues with college scholarships and future employment.

Our program helps children and families with the following:
1) Understanding how social media can invade privacy
2) How screen-time impacts depression
3) How we have become a distracted society due to parents and children's use of social media
4) The legal issues related to sexting
5) How use of social media impacts careers and scholarships
6) How cyberbullying impacts children and the growth of teen suicide
