Wraparound Facilitator Training: Developing Effective Needs Statements

Wraparound seeks to assure that families get help and support that truly meets their needs. Inherent in this expectation is a framework around defining unmet need that changes the way families and teams understand what help should do. This framework changes the way people on teams see the “problems” they are addressing and through this change pushes team members and families to define help differently than they do in a typical team meeting setting. This session will provide facilitators with an intensive opportunity to hone their skills in the areas of developing and using effective needs statements throughout the team planning process. Tools and techniques for identifying unmet needs, teaching teams how to use this framework effectively, and evaluating the effectiveness’ of drafted needs statements will be presented during this session.

Learning Objectives

1.)    Participants will learn the logic and expectation behind the unmet needs concept as it applies to wraparound planning

2.)    Participants will learn and practice tools used in identifying and documenting unmet needs statements, with families, and with teams

3.)    Participants will learn and practice steps useful during team meetings for helping team members develop strengths-based responses to unmet needs as a part of the team planning process

4.)    Participants will learn tools for assessing the efficacy of needs statements they draft in their work with families
