Your Trainers

La Shanda M. Sugg is a native of Detroit, Michigan and a graduate of the University of Michigan. Her passion and calling to help others gain insight into their pasts in order to positively inform their futures motivated her to earn a Master of Arts in Counseling degree from Cincinnati Christian University and found Labors of Love Counseling and Consulting, LLC. Through an understanding of mental health, the brain, EMDR, and developmental and relational trauma, La Shanda assists families, couples, individuals, agencies, and companies identify challenging and disruptive behaviors, understand the purpose they once served, and build resilience to develop new practices that will lead to fulfillment and success.  She is driven to help those who have experienced trauma and other adverse experiences gain an understanding and feel relief from their symptoms.

Sarah Buffie MSW, LSW, founding director of Soul Bird Consulting believes that nothing has the power to heal like supportive relationships.  Specializing in trauma responsive care, she helps organizations and individuals disrupt current models of thinking by building empathy and understanding around the effects of trauma. Sarah has worked in community organizing- specifically, Asset Based Community Development, for over a decade and has a deep passion for her work.  Her focus is to spread awareness about how trauma affects the brain and body, and teach effective approaches for developing resilience within the people organizations strive to serve, and the people closest to the work, caregivers and direct providers.  Sarah received her Masters in Social Work from Northern Kentucky University with a focus in trauma, positive psychology, and mindfulness. With years working closely in her Cincinnati community through her Americorps service as well as abroad with her Peace Corps service in Namibia, Africa, Sarah brings a unique community building lens to the work.

The Butler County Family and Children First Council is hosting an intensive 6 session series to equip Partnership to Reduce Infant Mortality (PRIM) partners with knowledge about trauma and resiliency to better serve and support moms & babies in our community.  We will be joining one another on a journey to help identify how adverse childhood experiences (ACES), implicit bias, toxic stress and trauma can affect the health of moms & babies. Participants who complete the series will be able to identify and explain the effects of trauma, as well as, how to build resiliency skills in the families they serve. By working with new mothers, we can foster healthy development in their children and help break the cycle of trauma. We will join a learning community to address these issues in our work with mothers and explore how to build more supportive & resilient communities. Participants must commit to attending all sessions in the series, as they build upon each other.  CEUs will only be submitted for participants who complete all sessions.

1.    Trauma is Real.  Together We Can Heal. 2/18/20 9am-4pm
Trauma impacts the body and brain in various ways. This training will create a space to go deeper into the impact of trauma while emphasizing the resilience that is built through relationship and community. Participants will:

  • Understand the impacts of trauma
  • Identify Resilience Factors
  • Grow their empathy
2.    Understanding Stress and the Body’s Response- 2/25/20 1-4pm

The brain’s top priorities are to keep us alive, keep us safe, and help us avoid pain.  This training explores the survival and hidden resilience in the “challenging behaviors” we often see. Participants will:

  • Develop new language around challenges they face
  • Identify survival strategies in those with whom they work, support, and love
  • Understand their own survival strategies

3.    Centering Co-Regulation- 3/3/20 1-4pm
Regulation is the state of feeling calm and safe in our bodies.  Self-regulation requires higher level thinking, which is not accessible during times of fear and dysregulation.  This training will focus on Co-regulation, which helps all feel safe, seen, and heard.
Participants will:

  • Understand regulation and how it’s experienced in the body
  • Identify the importance of bottom-up processing
  • Identify two co-regulation strategies

 4.    Focusing on Felt Safety- 3/24/20 1-4pm
One does not experience safety by thinking they are safe, but by feeling safe.  The absence of threat does not equal safety, but the presence of safety cues.  This training explores practical ways to help others experience felt safety in our presence and environments.
Participants will:

  • Understand felt safety
  • Identify safety cues
  • Understand the four domains of safety
5.    Cultural Humility- 3/31/20 1-4pm

Our lived experiences directly affect how we engage with the world.  This training will create space to examine how our global and individual cultures and experiences impact our work and relationships. Participants will:

  • Understand the distinction between Cultural Competence and Cultural Humility
  • Be introduced to the concept of bias
  • Increase self-awareness and how that impacts the work they do and relationships they build
6.    Putting it all together- 4/7/20 9am-4pm

This session will deepen our connection with one another and foster an environment where sharing, planning, and implementation come together. Participants will:

  • Identify practical applications relevant to their individual work
  • Identify ways to grow resilience in self and others
  • Practice sharing their learning
