Seed Saving - Preserving Garden Heritage and Biodiversity, while saving money on your seed costs!
Tired of the ever increasing cost of seeds for your garden? Would you like to ensure that your seeds are not genetically modified (GMO's)? Maybe you had one plant in your garden that was far superior to the rest of the seeds you planted and you would like to save the seed from this plant because it preformed so well under your conditions. All these are excellent reasons to join The Center for Rural Culture at our Seed Saving Workshop Saturday morning July 20, 2013
Now that the garden is in full swing with plenty of ripe fruits it's time to think about next season. At this workshop Betsy Trice (faculty at JSRCC) will take the mystery out of seed saving. The program will discuss the distances between varieties that you need to insure that cross pollination does not occur. We will then move on to J Sarge’s sustainable garden area, discuss some gardening techniques and harvest numerous fruits and vegetables to prepare for extracting their seeds. Back in the lab Betsy will demonstrate how to prepare the fruits for seed collection and everyone will join in the process as we work through the different techniques. We finish up with a discussion on seed drying and seed storage to preserve your harvest till next season.
As part of the program all participants will be certified as JSRCC Community Seed Bank participants and be able to access the treasure trove of seed available through the seed bank.
Join us for this great informational session. Help preserve the diversity of our seed selections and meet like-minded folks in the community that share your interest in gardening. Come and join in the fun.
