Shiitake Mushrooms at Home

Shiitake Mushrooms are a delicious and healthful addition to any meal. All too often though when we look for them at the supermarket they are shrivled, bruised with a long tough stem - down right unappetizing! Did you realize that they are easy to produce at home in limited space and with a limited commitment of time? Join the CRC for this fun and informative program that will have you harvesting delicious fresh mushrooms from your own backyard.

Stu Doetzer, a long time mushroom producer will take you through the process from selecting logs to harvesting and storage of the shiitakes.

This program will discuss the techniques for growing shiitakes on oak logs in central Virginia. Some of the topics will include a brief history of the industry, selection of logs, the tools needed, along with the inoculation process. Stu will point out some of the common problems that may affect your production as well as ways to minimize them.  The program will also cover the harvest and storage techniques that will maximize the shelf life of your harvest. At the end of the discussions, he will lead participants on a tour of his production area to see the process in action.

THEN THE WORKS BEGINS!!

This is an interactive/hands-on program.  Each participant  will be given a log to innoculate with  mushroom spawn.  Come learn the process,  use the tools and take home your own shiitake log.

This program is one of the Center's most popular.  Be sure to click on the link below to register early, space and supplies are limited.
