Foundation Level Seminar Series 2016

The foundation of a pyramid determines its strength, stability, and height to which it can grow. Similar to a pyramid, Community Action Agencies need solid foundations to maintain a strong organization and help it reach its goals. The Foundation Level Seminar Series (FLSS) was created for entry-level and new staff and focuses on core skill sets to empower attendees in their work helping low-income people. The series gives opportunities for staff to develop both personally and professionally allowing to strengthen the agency as a whole.

FLSS is slated to be held each year in the spring and fall and will cover a variety of topics to enhance foundational skills. Reduced or free registration will be offered when possible to make it affordable and enable agencies to send more staff than would otherwise be possible. Courses will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Central Ohio. Lunch will be provided.

Bridges Out of Poverty with Jeffrey Diver, Executive Director of Supports to Encourage Low-Income Families (Butler County); Certified Bridges Out of Poverty Trainer

Bridges Out of Poverty is a nationally-known concept that challenges people’s perceptions of poverty in order to help individuals, institutions, and communities alleviate poverty. This training challenges perceptions of poverty to break down stereotypes and provides participants opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of the obstacles faced by low-income people.

Based on the work of poverty researcher Dr. Ruby Payne, Bridges Out of Poverty is not a program; it is a framework for understanding poverty and the individuals who live in poverty. The workshop is highly participatory to increase retention and utilization of key concepts.

People and organizations use Bridges to develop programs and strategies that:

  • Improve relationships at the individual level.
  • Improve outcomes at the organizational level.
  • Change systems at the community level.

The objectives of the workshop are to:

  • Give examples of hidden rules among classes.
  • Analyze the eight resources of a customer or employee.
  • Explain how economic realities affect patterns of living.
  • Explain language registers, discourse patterns, and story structure.
  • Explain how mental models are effective interventions for cognitive and language barriers.
  • Identify principles for improving outcomes with individuals from generational poverty.

This is a free event! Registration is limited.
