NJ YAP Summer of Peace:  64 days, 64 ways 

Please join us this summer as we launch our 6^th annual Summer of Peace to promote community safety and positive interactions across New Jersey.   As you are aware, many youth and families in our communities face and overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles on a daily basis.  In particular, many witness incidents of violence first hand or have been willing or unwilling participants in violent acts; many are exposed to domestic violence, bullying, gang activity, etc.  Violence has occurred so often in the lives of some of our youth and families that it has become a normal part of their existence and some have become desensitized to its impact as a means of protecting themselves emotionally.

The “Summer of Peace” initiative is our movement to counter and change patterns of violence.  It stems from the Season of Nonviolence developed by the Association for Global New Thought held annually from January to April.  The Summer Season of Peace starts on July 1st and ends on September 2nd.  The purpose of the project is to begin a dialogue with our youth that helps them engage in thoughts and actions that contribute toward peace: we want peace to be at the forefront of their thinking throughout the summer months. We invite you to download the booklet of daily practices as a guide to help you brainstorm ways to participate- and to encourage others to join you!

YAP is a leader in partnering with youth, families and the community to address the social ills within our neighborhoods through engaging the community. YAP believes that all communities are rich in resources, though many of those resources are not recognized because they exist outside of systems and formal organizations.  Recognizing and utilizing the strengths that our youth possess is the first step on our road to a successful partnership with results that will benefit us all. YAP is making a commitment to address the violence within our communities by asking that we partner together to make peace a reality for our youth this summer.
