The "D" word - Demystifying periodonal diagnosis for the dental hygienist presented by Jila Torabi, RDH, BS

Periodontal disease diagnosis by the dental hygienist has been a controversial topic in dentistry. Even though dental hygienists do not "diagnose" oral conditions, their ample knowledge of periodontal disease and conditions makes them the lone expert in detecting and treating periodontitis in the general practitioner's office. This course is a brief review of periodontal disease classifications, extent and severity of periodontal disease, periodontal disease diagnosis, and treatment options according to the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the American Dental Association (ADA).

After today's course the dental professional will be able to:

  • categorize AAP and ADA periodontal disease classification for an accurate diagnosis in patient care.
  • analyze the extent and severity of periodontitis through case studies.
  • justify the need for accurate diagnosis of periodontal disease in the dental practice.

Spotlight on the digital epidemic- Unexpected consequences of modern day devices presented by Anne N. Guignon, RDH, MPH, CSP

Our lives are built around the daily use of digital devices. Today's world demands 24/7 connectivity creating a sense of immediacy that hangs like a cloud over our lives. Dental professionals are at high risk for developing a workplace-related mucoskeletal disorder. Two decades ago it would have been impossible to forecast the physical, emotional and psychosocial impact of modern day devices. Are the convenience and the connectivity adding health challenges?

Journals are filling up with alarming reports on how cell phones, tablets, laptops and desktops are changing our bodies physically and impacting our minds. Incessant usage contributes to sedentary lifestyles, sets the stage for permanent, debilitating mucoskeletal conditions, is a root cause of distracted driving, walking and job performance, and is a contributing factor to social isolation, sleep disorders and the rising rates of device addiction.

After today's course the dental professional will:

  • recognize how digital devices contribute to poor posture and sedentary lifestyles
  • understand the emotional impact of living in a world of immediacy
  • appreciate how magnification, illumination and saddle seating lessen the impact of work
  • adopt behaviors that reduce the emotional impact of communication activities

Exploring the oral microbiome - Stunning revelations about how microbes actually create disease presented by Anne N. Guignon, RDH, MPH, CSP

Recent discoveries about polymicrobrial biofilms are both disturbing and thought provoking. Dental diseases are not classic infections. New molecular techniques demonstrate caries, periodontal disease and candidiasis are manifestations of dramatic, sustained shifts in microbial ecology that overwhelm the host immune system.

Microbes once thought to be key in the oral diseases may actually play a minor role, while relatively unknown species, or even the entire microbial community, may be responsible for increased virulence, sustained acid production, enhanced inflammation and continued tissue destruction.

Homeostasis still remains the ultimate goal, but new disease concepts like dysbiosis, microbial consortiums, inflammophilic bacteria, commensal pathobionts and keystone pathogens are changing the conversation and challenging how dental disease prevention and treatments are viewed today.

After today's course the dental professional will:

  • appreciate the difference between classic infections and dysbiosis
  • discover how commensal microbes become pathobionts
  • learn how enamel and dentin caries differ ecologically
  • understand the role of keystone pathogens and inflammophilic microbes in peridontal disease
  • recognize how prescription trays deliver and sustain 1.7% hygdrogen peroxide gel in the sulcus
  • learn about non-antibiotic strategies that target peridontal pathogens
