Fiber and Fashion: Folk Art to Art-to-Wear

Mingei International Museum Permanent Collection

The Mingei International Museum in San Diego’s Balboa park is the morning site for our program.  Established in 1978, Mingei International Museum collects, conserves and exhibits arts of daily use.  The Museum’s collection is a singular mix of folk art, craft and design—ranging from ceremonial objects to vessels to furniture, with significant holdings of textiles, quilts, and beads. Mingei’s textile collection is comprised of approximately 7000 textiles spanning eight centuries the oldest being Pre-Columbian Peruvian textiles from the 11^th to the 15^th century CE (currently on view) and over 110 countries and cultures.

The Senior Collection Manager, Barbara Hanson-Forsyth and the Textile Collection Manager, Sarah Winston will share information regarding Mingei permanent collection. The presentation that follows will focus primarily on vestments from Central Asia. We’ll have a close-up look at some of the museum’s best examples of Uzbek and Turkmen chapans (men and women's coats) and wedding hats, as well as accompanying jewelry. We’ll discuss weaving, dyeing and embroidery techniques used in the making of this garments.

In addition to this private viewing, we will enjoy a guided tour of the galleries. Current exhibits of special interest include Arline Fisch’s one of a kind, featuring jewelry and knitted and crocheted ornament, Art of the Americas: Pre-Columbia, Mesoamerican art featuring Mingei’s oldest textiles from 11^th-15^th century Coastal Peru,…Trappings-a multicultural exhibition displaying woven saddle bags, decorated wedding cart cover from Gujarat, and Uzbek ceremonial camel covers.

In the afternoon we will make a visit to the large, bright downtown studio of Fiber Artist, Anne Abendroth.

 
Southern Waters by Anne Abendroth, Woven on an AVL loom, and on 16 shafts, the threading structure of this costume is called “Shadow Weave”. It is traditionally woven with very fine threads, producing a very small pattern. By using heavier perle cottons, the patterns become more definite.
The small, white stone beads of birds also remind me of the tropics and its colorful and varied wildlife.

Anne is a weaver and a painter with a unique point of view of art-to-wear. She is known as a master weaver and her works showcase complex techniques from a variety of fibers and mixed media.

The award-winning works by Anne Abendroth are her loom-woven creations that are “people-sized”. Anne's woven art appear to be real garments or costumes, but are actually non-wearable art. These hand loomed Mixed Media pieces are attached to canvas on stretcher bars. This integration of Mixed Media weaving with contemporary acrylic painting is intriguingly artistic and innovative.

The visit to Master Weaver Anne’s studio will give us a unique opportunity to see a beautiful melding of a traditional craft with a contemporary artistic esthetic fused with a modern narrative.
