This conference is for individuals with an autism spectrum disorder who are transitioning to adulthood and for professionals working in this field.
Participants will learn about post-secondary education options, and how to evaluate them; how to optimize the transition to employment; as well as practical strategies to improve organization, time management, metacognition, self regulation, and other executive functioning skills.
The keynote address will be given by Dr. Stephen Shore. Non-verbal until four years of age, and with much assistance from others, Dr. Shore completed his doctoral dissertation from Boston University. Currently, he is a professor at Adelphi University teaching a course in special education and autism. He is the author of Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome, Ask and Don't Tell: Self-Advocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum, and the critically acclaimed Understanding Autism for Dummies.
In addition to the keynote address, the conference will feature a panel of young adults who are transitioning into the work force, as well as a panel of representatives from post-secondary education institutions.
