Exchanges is an evening program to spark discovery, learning and discussion about the past, present and future of science and medicine.

Join us for “Sugar Strike,” a short 15-minute talk by author, historian, and TEDx speaker Brandy Schillace, PhD as she leads a discussion on diabetes, a disease that affects more than 29 million Americans. Diabetes mellitus, an endocrine disorder, inhibits the body’s production of insulin, a hormone that enables cells in the body to absorb sugar. We now consider diabetes a treatable disease, with the discovery of insulin in 1921. Yet, before insulin, diabetes was largely untreatable and life threatening for children and adults. This program will explore diabetes past and have us looking toward the future of treatment. Joining Dr. Schillace for this program will be a panel of experts who will help us understand the latest therapies and treatments for both juvenile and adult onset diabetes.

Our guest panelists include:

  • Rose Gubitosi-Klug, MD, Ph.D. - Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology at
UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital
  • Tom Bennett, Executive Director, Diabetes Partnership of Cleveland
  • Betul Hatipoglu, MD - Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and Endocrinologist at Cleveland Clinic

This lecture event will be held downtown at the Global Center for Health Innovation, in the Welcome Center Theater, sponsored by Vitamix. The Global Center is located at 1 St. Clair Avenue NE, just across the street from the Marriott Downtown at Key Center.

Networking with refreshments will begin at 5:30 pm. The program
will start at 6:00 pm and finish around 7:30 pm. Complimentary refreshments will be available.

Please note this event will be videotaped.
