In 1980, Jean Laville graduated in economics, majoring in political economy, from the Higher Business School (HEC) in Lausanne. After collaborating with several research programmes for the Swiss National Fund for Scientific Research, Jean Laville followed the doctorate programme of the University Institute of Higher International Studies (Institut Universitaire des Hautes Études Internationales) in Geneva. At the same time, he also taught economics, international economics and finance, as an assistant professor at the Department of Economics of the University of Geneva.
From 1988 to 2002, Jean Laville held the position of asset manager with Banque Pictet & Cie in Geneva. As Deputy Director of the quantitative office of the Institutional Management Department, he was responsible for the quantitative management of major institutional clients. Since 1998, Jean Laville has developed a management concept with sustainable development criteria for Banque Pictet & Cie and has managed this type of specialised portfolio. Jean Laville is also co-founder and Vice-Chairman of the society Sustainable Finance Geneva.
