2018 Iowa Outdoor Recreation Summit

The past few years, a lot of time has been spent on setting the framework for increasing participation in outdoor recreation in Iowa. Last year, Iowa's R3 Plan was rolled out at our meeting and implementation has been taking place ever since. Progress is being made regularly with partners, industry, and agency staff, but much more collaboration is needed to accomplish our shared goals.
This year's summit will start to dive into a deeper understanding our current users and potential new customers. We'll be spotlighting successes of partners from around the state. Additionally, we'll gain knowledge on social media use strategies, while leaving plenty of time to network and collaborate. A final agenda will be sent prior to the Summit. Lunch will be provided.

Draft Agenda Topics:
  • Iowa's R3 Report Card  - A reflection on work completed to date, what's still needed, where we go from here.
  • What We Have Been Doing to Get People Outdoors - A series of mini presentations by DNR staff, County Conservation Board Staff, Industry Partners and NGO Partners on programs/efforts going on around the state.
  • 2018 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan - Overview, goals, what we have learned from the statewide survey and what it means for recreation in Iowa.
  • Adult Learning Principles/Nature in American's Study - A look at what is motivating people today to participate in outdoor recreation and how to design learning programs to impact adult audiences.
  • Utilizing Social Media to Increase Outdoor Recreation Participation - Tim Akimoff, Oregon Department of Fish and Game, will join us to share what he has been doing for the state of Oregon to generate excitement, awareness and more participation in Outdoor Recreation through various social media platforms.
  • Understanding our Audiences - Overview of Iowa's Apprentice License Survey Results, LifeModes and Tapestry Segments of Iowa's Hunters, Millennial & Latino Focus Group Results
  • Round Table Exercise - An opportunity to discuss what's been working, what types of support and information organizations need and challenges being faced in regards to outdoor recreation participation.
