Physicians and nurses in the chronic pain field know how difficult chronic, refractory complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) can be to treat. More than 150 years since it was initially identified, we are still looking for effective treatments for this horribly painful condition. In the last few years, pain management physicians have begun using IV ketamine to treat people with CRPS.  Although some studies show promising results, protocols vary widely and safety and efficacy are unproven. In fact, there are 18 peer-reviewed journal articles in PubMed on using IV Ketamine for CRPS and the outcomes are inconclusive. The only thing we know for sure is that we need more studies, more research, and targeted discussions. People who suffer from CRPS are depending on it.
