THE WARMTH OF OTHER SUNS: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration.

The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson tells the story of the 55-year exodus of almost six million people of African-descent as they changed the face of America. The story is told through the lives of three incredible people—Ida Mae Gladney, George Starling, and Robert Joseph Pershing Foster—who fled the South in search of better lives and greater equality.

Join Ms. Courtney Williams, doctoral student and the Huel D. Perkins Fellow in the Department of Sociology at Louisiana State University and Rev. Gary Smith, director of the Center for Racial Justice, as they create “brave multiracial space” to learn from these historical figures and one another.

The hope of this book study is for participants to broaden their own perspectives while also renewing today’s call to actively seek greater racial justice, reconciliation, and healing.

The book discussion will run Wednesdays Janaury 12  thru March 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. EST. Please note, we will take a one-week break on Ash Wednesday, March 3. The book can be purchased through a variety of bookstores, however, we encourage you to purchase it through a black-owned book seller (see https://bookshop.org/lists/black-owned-bookstores-2021 for options in every state). Please read pages 1-94 for the first session. This book discussion is sponsored by the Center for Racial Justice and the “New & Right Spirit” antiracism program of the UCC-NY Conference.
