Course description

This advance course in effective economic evaluation and appraisal will introduce participants to some of the latest methods to assess the impact of policy on economic and social outcomes.

The course will provide a recap on key appraisal techniques before introducing the latest methods in evaluation.

This one day course will discuss the weaknesses of simple descriptive statistics and highlight the benefits (and challenges) in finding relevant control groups to compare policy outcomes to.

The course assumes that participants will have experience in appraisal and evaluation and be comfortable in statistical analysis.

Suitable for individuals wanting to learn the latest techniques in economic evaluation.

Most attendees will be people undertaking or commissioning evaluations. You will have experience in statistics and data work (including regression analysis).

Key Learning Objectives

By the end of the course you will –

Have a refreshed knowledge of economic appraisal and evaluation
Learn about the weaknesses of relying upon descriptive statistics to conduct evaluations of public policy
Appreciate the importance of identifying a relevant control group for an evaluation and different methods that are used to do this.
Appreciate the possibilities for evaluation provided by quasi-experimental methods– for example using comparisons around a treatment threshold (regression discontinuity) as well as experimental methods like a randomised control trial.
