"Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office"

Course Description:
Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office

An emergency situation in the dental office is a frightening and overwhelming experience for all involved. The key to providing the best care for all involved is to be prepared. When you are prepared for an emergency, the emergency ceases to exist. Every one of us in practice will experience a situation that will require intervention at one point in our career. Successful management of a medical emergency involves working both as an individual and in groups in a coordinated response to address the presenting problem.
When the dental team is prepared, we can not only identify the problem but we can respond swiftly to affect a successful conclusion. In this lecture, we will review the common medical problems that can present and develop specific protocols to respond and resolve the emergency.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the most common types of emergencies that present in the dental office.
2. Understand and recognize how the dental team works together to address these issues and concerns.
3. Learn to develop a protocol to assist a patient or staff member in distress
4. Recognize the use of various medications in your emergency kit and how they work and more importantly when to use them.
5. Develop an emergency preparedness checklist so that staff members have very specific duties.

The target audience for this lecture is dental staff, hygienists, and dentists.
