Critically acclaimed Chicago-based writer Fern Schumer Chapman has written several award-winning books. Her memoir, MOTHERLAND -- a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award, and a BookSense76 pick -- is a popular choice for book clubs. Her other books, IS IT NIGHT OR DAY?, LIKE FINDING MY TWIN, and STUMBLING ON HISTORY are used in middle school classrooms. In 2004, the Illinois Association of Teachers of English (IATE) named Chapman the "Illinois Author of the Year." Twice, Oprah Winfrey shows have featured her books.

I’m writing to tell you about The Leopold and Loeb Files (July 17, 2018; Midway Books; 978-1-57284-240-3; $35), an extraordinary primary source–driven history of one of the most infamous crimes ever committed. On March 3, 2009, a Northwestern University Library exhibition about the case called The Murder That Wouldn’t Die debuted.

Its curator, Nina Barrett, built the exhibit with a hard-facts approach to the notorious story: two University of Chicago students, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, kidnapped and killed 14-year-old Robert Franks in 1924 in a sinister attempt to commit “the perfect crime.” At the time, the murder was dubbed the “crime of the century,” and the mythology surrounding the case has continued to capture the imagination of generation after generation, as evidenced by Barrett’s exhibit, which was one of the most popular the Library has ever seen.

After the exhibit closed, Barrett continued to uncover additional primary source material—much of which spent decades filed haphazardly in the basement of Northwestern University’s law school—and has collected her findings in The Leopold and Loeb Files.
