Working the Frontline: Highly Effective Behavior Strategies for the Paraeducator in an Inclusive School

Designed specifically for paraprofessionals/paraeducators. Join Amanda and Danielle from Navigating Behavior Change, LLC on Tuesdays: 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/24 & 10/31/2023 from 3:00-4:30pm as they provide practical and research-based information and strategies to best support students exhibiting challenging behavior in the school setting.

Participants will gain knowledge and skills to understand why a student may be engaging in challenging behavior, learn preventative strategies, how to respond effectively when a student is engaging in challenging behavior, and how to best advocate for needed supports, both for themselves and for their students. Resources will be provided.

Objectives: By the end of this training series, participants will be able to:

  1. List four reasons students may engage in challenging behavior.

  2. Describe why it is important to identify when students are likely to struggle.

  3. List the steps to utilize pre-correction.

  4. Describe the rationale for acknowledging appropriate student behavior.

  5. State the difference between a response and a reaction.

  6. List three ways to collaborate with school staff.

Training #1: What Drives Behavior? Why We Do What We Do- September 26, 2023

Description: In this session, participants will learn the ‘why’ behind behaviors- both appropriate and inappropriate. The role of trauma, student experiences, missing skills, and past outcomes will be discussed to explain how and why some of our students engage in challenging behaviors.

Training #2: Identifying Individual Student Challenges- October 03, 2023

Description: During this session, participants will learn to identify what routines, times of the day, or tasks/activities are most difficult for their students. Participants will be taught the importance of identifying early signs that a student is frustrated or upset so that they can intervene as quickly as possible.

Training #3: Proactive Strategies to Support Your Students- October 10, 2023

Description: In this session, participants will learn to effectively use proactive strategies to limit student frustration and challenging behaviors. Effective use of visual supports, prompts, and pre-correction will be taught.

Training #4: Responding Effectively to Appropriate Behaviors-October 17, 2023

Description: During this session, participants will learn why it is important to acknowledge appropriate studentehaviors. The role of tangible rewards, verbal praise, and natural outcomes will be discussed. Participants will also learn to utilize Behavior Specific Praise as an effective response to appropriate behaviors.

Training #5: Responding Effectively to Inappropriate Behaviors- October 24, 2023

Description: In this session, participants will learn about the escalation cycle and effective responses at each level. Participants will also learn the difference between reactions and responses, why planned responses are best, and why they should reflect on their own behaviors.

Training #6: The Role of Collaboration and Self-Advocacy- October 31, 2023

Description: In the final session, participants will learn the importance of advocating for student information (e.g., modifications, accommodations, behavior plans) and training so they can effectively support the students they work with. Participants will also learn when and how to collaborate with building staff to share knowledge and advocate for student needs across settings.

Contact hours will be provided to attendees.
