About the Instructor

Dr. W. Todd Watson is an international plant health care consultant and has worked in private and public sectors in tree and landscape education, research, and management for over 25 years.  He has a BS degree in Horticulture and a PhD in Plant Pathology from Texas A&M University.

Dr. Watson is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at Texas A&M University and recently was the Program Leader for Urban and Community Forestry where he conducted research and taught arboriculture and urban forestry classes.  In 2005, he was named a Montague Teaching Scholar at Texas A&M, and he received the SLATE award for teaching excellence in 2009.  He has authored several articles in research journals and professional publications, and he has provided numerous tree and landscape presentations throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Dr. Watson has served on committees and editorial boards for the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).  In addition, he has been the Vice President of the Arboricultural Research and Education Academy, and served as President of the ISA Texas chapter.  Dr. Watson is an ISA Board-Certified Master Arborist, Tree Risk Assessment Qualified, and has been voted Texas Arborist of the Year.

Update to Attendees Regarding Weather
February 2, 2022 - 12:40 pm

As expected, today has been a day of phone calls and emails concerning the weather and Arboriculture 101.  Based of the weather forecast available to us at the moment, Brazos County is only in a Winter Weather Advisory.  Most of the potentially freezing precipitation will occur while we are in class.  So far, none of the schools or businesses in Brazos County have announced any closings.  
 
This is the 18th year we've had Arboriculture 101 in January-February, and is not the first time that we have had icy and snowy conditions.  Our experience has been that roads within Bryan/College Station have been well maintained with sand and salt.  As discussed a couple of weeks ago in class, you are in charge of your own safety.  So, you decide what is right for you.  For those who feel uncomfortable coming to the last 2 days of class, we are going to do something that we have never done before.  If you choose to stay home this week, we will offer you a $50 discount on registration for days 3 and 4 of Arboriculture 101 - 2023. Please remember that we are still incurring all the costs for rentals, food, and supplies for this week's class.

Some of you have suggested online training.  While it is not currently available for this course, we are working to make that happen in the future.  It is a tedious, time-consuming, and costly project.

Arboriculture 101 is unique.  Unlike some workshops, this short course utilizes lecture and hands-on instruction.  Attendees have the opportunity to learn real world applications to validate concepts taught in the lectures.  A variety of instructional methods, such as hands-on displays, interactive discussions, and media demonstrations will be used as effective tools to address the varied learning styles of the students.

Dr. Watson's approach to education is to be a facilitator of learning.  This begins with teaching basic concepts and then building on these facts towards more complex subject matter.  Between classes, participants are encouraged to study and assimilate the information covered during the previous class.  Each student will receive a manual of study notes, study questions, and a list of online resources to assist in learning the information presented.

Some participants may only want to attend one or two days instead of the entire workshop to obtain continuing education credits or additional training in specific areas.  Attendees who participate in the entire 4-day short course will receive a certificate of completion.
