#1 RULE OF DISASTER RELIEF: Be flexible and patient.
On April 29, 2017 seven tornados plowed through Van Zant, Henderson, and Rains County Texas causing a path of destruction nearly 55 miles long and up to one mile wide. The tornados caused four deaths, injured 56 people, and damaged or destroyed nearly 2,000 buildings. There are thousands of survivors of the storms that need help!
The Holy Cow Smokers Disaster Relief Ministry, Lamb of God Lutheran Church from Flower Mound TX in cooperation with Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Canton TX will be hosting two work days in the affected area on Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21, 2017. Volunteers will assist residents that were affected by the storms by distributing free, hot BBQ meals to survivors, volunteers, police, fire, and EMT’s and cleaning up debris, chainsaw, and provide spiritual care where needed. There will be work for at least 100 volunteers each day!
Cleanup chainsaw and spiritual care volunteers will need to meet at the headquarters at 8:30 am in order to acquire work site addresses. The address for headquarters is 630 TX-19, Canton, TX under the "Original Pavilion" at the First Monday Trade Days grounds. Chainsaw operators must be 18 years or older and have chainsaw chaps, steel toed boots, eye and hearing protection.
All volunteers must register prior to May 20, 2017. Once registered, you will be provided information about what to wear, what to bring, and what to expect on the work day. By registering you will also be provided updates about the work day via email. Volunteers need only register online once either through the LOG/Holy Cow Smokers or Disaster Care Ministry/Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, LERT. Do not register for both.
Food volunteers can be ages 10 to 100 and need to meet at headquarters at 9:00 am. Volunteers under 18 must have a parent or guardian present at all times during the work day.
We would like to encourage volunteers from the D/FW area to attend the Contemporary Worship Service and Communion at Lamb of God on Saturday May 20 at 5:00 pm so that they may be able to assist in Canton Sunday morning and afternoon.
Cost for each BBQ meal is $2.50. Funds for the food and supplies are being provided by the Holy Cow Smokers Disaster Relief Ministry. We will be providing at least 1,500 meals during the work day and the meals will be provided at no charge to our volunteers. If you would like to make a monetary donation to support the Holy Cow Smokers Disaster Relief Ministry, this may be done via credit or debit card online here or mail a check to Lamb of God Lutheran Church, 1401 Cross Timbers Road, Flower Mound TX 75028 (HCS Disaster Relief in memo). Checks may be placed in the collection plate or given to Dawn or Gail in the church office.
