WELCOME to the official webpage of the 2nd Annual Conference on Breast Cancer & African Americans (BCAA)!  The Community Partnership Program (CPP) of the Stanford Cancer Institute (SCI) is pleased to host this special community event focused on breast cancer disparities in African American populations in the Greater SF Bay Area and surrounding counties. Join us for an informative dialogue with clinicians, researchers, health professionals, cancer survivors, caregivers, advocates, and other key stakeholders in the African American community.

The purpose of this event is to disseminate breast cancer information and education that is culturally-tailored to African Americans in an effort to reduce disparities and the burden of cancer among this population in the Greater SF Bay Area. Topics will include proper breast health; breast cancer risk reduction; early detection; cancer biology; nutrition; physical activity; clinical updates/treatment options; survivorship; and advocacy.  

There will be a special keynote presentation on "Reducing Breast Cancer Disparities in African American Women" by Carrie P. Hunter, M.D., M.P.H., President and CEO of Oncology Consulting International, LLC. Dr. Hunter is a medical oncologist and former Program Director for the Community Clinical Oncology Program, Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and past Program Director and Project Officer for the NIH Women’s Health Initiative. She is a member of Avon Foundation Scientific Advisory Board; the Board of the African Cancer Center, Lagos, Nigeria; and the Board of Governors of New York University School of Medicine.

The target audience for this event includes African American women of all ages and health status, as well as cancer patients, survivors, family members, caregivers, friends, community advocates, researchers, clinicians, and health care professionals.

This event is sponsored by the Stanford Cancer Institute's Community Partnership Program and co-sponsored by the Alliance for Health Equity and Social Justice, American Cancer Society, Bay Area Disparities Coalition, Breast Cancer Connections, Cancer Prevention Institute of California, Multi-Cultural Cancer Community, and the Women's Cancer Resource Center. Community partners and supporters of this event include the Bay Area Black Nurses Association, Bayview Health & Wellness Center, Fighting 4 the Tatas Breast Cancer Organization, Flawless Hair Dezigns/Modern M'age Foundation, Pan African Union at Diablo Valley College, San Francisco Affiliate of Sisters Network, Inc., Take Wings Foundation, and a host of other community groups and faith-based institutions.

There is NO COST TO ATTEND this event, but registration is required.  Registration includes breakfast and lunch, keynote presentation and lectures, health exhibits/resources, musical entertainment, networking opportunities, tote bag, raffle prizes, and more!  Early registration is encouraged since seating is limited. We ask that you please do not bring small children and non-service pets to this event. Registration Deadline is April 29th (all registrations must be received by this date).  NOTE: This deadline is pending seating availability at this event.  Registration can close at an earlier date if we reach capacity.

CEUs (Continuing Education Units) are available for Registered Nurses and other health professionals, including social workers, community health education specialists, etc. at no additional cost. 5 CEU hours will be provided by our partners - Bay Area Black Nurses Association - BRN Provider # CEP 9053. Must be registered for event and present throughout the entire program to receive full CEU credit. Bring your license number and sign up for CEUs at event check-in.

Complimentary Parking is available at the South San Francisco Conference Center.  The conference center also has an agreement to share parking with both its neighboring hotels - the Holiday Inn to the south and the CitiGarden Hotel to the north.  Additional parking is available diagonally across the street in the lot located between the Travelodge and the Best Western Grosvernor Hotel.
