WELCOME to the official webpage of the 3rd Annual Conference on Breast Cancer & African Americans (BCAA)!  The Community Partnership Program (CPP) of the Stanford Cancer Institute (SCI) is pleased to host this special community event focused on breast cancer disparities in African American populations in the Greater SF Bay Area and surrounding counties. Join us for an informative dialogue with clinicians, researchers, health professionals, cancer survivors, caregivers, advocates, and other key stakeholders in the African American community.

The purpose of this event is to disseminate breast cancer information and education that is culturally-tailored to African Americans in an effort to reduce disparities and the burden of cancer among this population in the Greater SF Bay Area. Topics will include proper breast self-awareness; breast cancer risk; early detection; nutrition; physical activity; treatment options; family history; personalized medicine; stress management; survivorship; caregiver/family support; and advocacy. 

There will be a special keynote address by Dr. April L. Speed on the ABC's of Breast Cancer Prevention. April L. Speed, M.D. is a Breast Surgeon and Owner of Just Breast, a prviate practice clinic specializing in transforming Breast Health to Your Best Health. As a breast expert, she provides 100% breast services to women, men and adolescents. Dr. Speed is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). She completed a breast surgery fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. In 2009, Dr. Speed was recognized by her peers and was awarded the ASCO National Diversity in Oncology Award. She serves on several Boards and is a highly sought-after speaker, author, consultant and lecturer on breast cancer and breast health. She recently made her television debut on a recent episode of 'Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA)' dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer.

The target audience for this event includes African American women of all ages and health status, as well as cancer patients, survivors, family members, caregivers, friends, community advocates, researchers, clinicians, and health care professionals.

This event is hosted and sponsored by the Stanford Cancer Institute's Community Partnership Program and co-sponsored by the Global Alliance for CHANGE. Partners for this event include the Bay Area Black Nurses Association, Bay Area Disparities Coalition, Bayview Health and Wellness Center, Cancer Prevention Institute of California, Women's Cancer Resource Center, and a host  of other community groups and organizations. Special Performance by Tabia African-American Theatre Ensemble based in San Jose, CA.  Tabia is in its 28th season of performances in the Bay Area, and has earned a stellar reputation for presenting productions that celebrate and explore the African-American experience.

There is NO COST TO ATTEND this event, but registration is required.  Registration includes breakfast and lunch, keynote presentation and lectures, health exhibits/resources, entertainment, networking opportunities, tote bag, raffle prizes, and more!  Early registration is encouraged since seating is limited. We ask that you please do not bring small children and non-service pets to this event. Registration Deadline is May 15th (all registrations must be received by this date).  NOTE: This deadline is pending seating availability at this event.  Registration can close at an earlier date if we reach capacity.

CEUs (Continuing Education Units) are available for Registered Nurses and other health professionals, including social workers, community health education specialists, etc. at no additional cost. 3.5 CEU hours will be provided by our partners - Bay Area Black Nurses Association - BRN Provider # CEP 9053. Must be registered for event and present throughout the entire program to receive full CEU credit. Bring your license number and sign up for CEUs at event check-in.

Complimentary Parking is available at the South San Francisco Conference Center.  The conference center also has an agreement to share parking with both its neighboring hotels - the Holiday Inn to the south and the CitiGarden Hotel to the north.  Additional parking is available diagonally across the street in the lot located between the Travelodge and the Best Western Grosvernor Hotel.

Complimentary Shuttle Service is available from/to the SSF BART station and the SSF Conference Center during peak periods (select morning and afternoon hours only) by advance request - contact us via email at pratliff@stanford.edu or by phone at 1.800.383.0941.
